After graduation Mr. Subramaniam went to Canada to work with Cominco Ltd, the single largest Zinc producers in the world. He was in Canada for two years. During this period, he became proficient in the game of Bridge and won the Canadian championship during 1975. He was also the youngest person then to attain the status of "National Master" in the American contract Bridge League (ACBL).
He returned to India and joined Carborundum Universal Ltd (presently called CUMI). In 1981 was conferred the “Muthiah Memorial" award for the Best performer in the company. He had also given National level cricket commentary in A.I.R for the Ranji and Duleep trophy matches and had interviewed players like Gavaskar and Vengsarkar in 1985 on behalf of A.I.R.
During his work at CUMI, he had also received three U.S patents during the period 1998-2000 for "a process for the preparation of Alumina Abrasives" and "Continuous Microwave Rotary furnace for processing Sintered ceramics".
During his tenure at CUMI, he became the youngest in the company to become a Plant Head in 1984 and also the youngest in the company to become the Head of the Strategic Business Unit (SBU) in 1994. He rose to the position of Vice President of the company before retiring.

• Was President of High Tension and Extra High Tension Association of Kerala: 1997-1999.
• Was Vice President of Kerala Management Association (1998-1999).
• Was Member of the National Panel of "Renewable Energy" of C.I.I. (Confederation of Indian Industry) -1998-1999.
• Trained Evaluator of the “Business Excellence Model” of C.I.I
• Was Vice President of Palghat District Cricket Association during 1985-87.
• Was President of Palghat District Table tennis Association in 1986-88 & was Vice President of Kerala State Table tennis association in 1987-88.
